JAPAN: Japanese refrigerant manufacturer AGC Asahi Glass says it has obtained ASHRAE certification for 1224yd(Z), its new low GWP HCFO refrigerant.

The new R1244yd(Z) is an A1 non-flammable, refrigerant designed mainly for use in centrifugal chillers, binary cycle generators and waste heat recovery heat pumps.

AGC will market the refrigerant as Amolea 1224yd with commercial production beginning in early 2018. The company maintains that the performance of R1224yd(Z) has already attracted interest from cooling equipment manufacturers both in Japan and elsewhere, and reveals that Japanese manufacturer Ebara Refrigeration has decided to adopt it for its next generation of centrifugal chillers.

It has been developed as an alternative to HFC–245fa, but with the added benefits of a GWP of less than 1. It is also said to offer equal or better refrigerant performance and stability. As well as new equipment, AGC maintains that it can also be used in certain existing equipment without major modifications.

The physical properties of 1224yd(Z) is very close to HCFC-245fa and HCFO-1233zd(E) and can be retrofitted to the equipment used for HFC-245fa and HCFO-1233zd(E) without changing design pressure.
