Copeland has inaugurated a new Engineering and Technology Center in Pune, Maharashtra, as part of its ₹500 crore (approximately $60 million) investment plan in India. The facility will support the company’s efforts in energy-efficient solutions, low-GWP and natural refrigerant technologies, and sustainable cold chain advancements.
Expanding Engineering Capabilities in India
The newly opened center spans 15,000 square meters (161,500 square feet) and houses over 320 engineers specializing in research and development (R&D), software, and firmware development. By situating the facility close to its Indian customer base, Copeland aims to accelerate product innovation and respond to market needs with sustainable solutions.
"Copeland’s presence in India spans over three decades. Our current investment plan, including this investment in our new state-of-the-art Pune Engineering and Technology Center, as well as the in-progress expansion of our manufacturing operations in Atit, underscore our commitment to the India market,” said Ross B. Shuster, Chief Executive Officer of Copeland. "With more than 15% of our global engineering team located in India, the local team plays a vital role in developing sustainability-focused technologies and products for both local and global customers."
Addressing Energy Efficiency and Climate Challenges
Copeland's focus on sustainability aligns with the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions in key industries such as HVAC and data centers. The company notes that data center cooling, which accounts for up to 50% of energy use, is a critical challenge. With the data center market projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 8% through 2026, Copeland aims to develop energy-efficient technologies to address these needs.
"Innovation is in Copeland's DNA, and our new Pune Technology and Engineering Center further enables our efforts to solving some of the world’s most complex climate challenges," said Patrick Forsythe, Chief Technology Officer at Copeland. "This investment will enhance Copeland's focus on innovation to help customers meet their net-zero goals and drive impactful change."
Strengthening Global R&D Efforts
The Pune center integrates with Copeland’s global network of engineering labs across nine countries. The facility will contribute to advancements in compression, sound and vibration reduction, electronics, power electronics, software, and controls. The company is also working on energy management solutions that reduce demand on electrical grids and support renewable energy adoption.
Copeland’s investment in India reflects its long-term commitment to the region and its strategic focus on sustainability. The expansion of its engineering and manufacturing footprint will enhance the company’s ability to develop cutting-edge solutions for the growing HVAC, refrigeration, and cold chain sectors.
